Atham — The Bloom of Onam
Onam, Kerala’s most cherished festival, begins with Atham, the first of the ten days of celebration. Falling on 28th August 2025, Atham sets the stage for the festivities with color, devotion, and joy. It is believed that King Mahabali, whose reign is remembered as a golden era of prosperity, begins his journey towards Kerala on this day. The people of Kerala welcome him with flowers, rituals, and prayers, symbolizing abundance and unity.
The Significance of Atham
Atham holds a special place in the Onam calendar because it marks the very first step in preparing for the arrival of Mahabali. On this day, families create the first layer of the Pookalam — the intricate floral carpet that grows in size and beauty over the following nine days. Traditionally, the Pookalam starts with a single ring of yellow flowers called Thumba. This simple yet profound design reminds us that great beauty emerges from humble beginnings.
Temples across Kerala, especially Thrikkakara Temple in Kochi, host special processions called Athachamayam, showcasing folk art, music, dance, and decorated elephants. Athachamayam is a vibrant reminder of Kerala’s cultural richness and inclusive spirit — values that continue to define Onam celebrations today.
How Atham is Celebrated at Home
Atham is all about starting afresh. Families thoroughly clean and decorate their homes, a ritual that symbolizes removing negativity and inviting prosperity. Women and children collect fresh flowers in the morning, arranging them in circular patterns on courtyards. The Pookalam, which begins modestly on Atham, grows day by day into an elaborate masterpiece by Thiruvonam.
It is also the day when families begin planning the Onam Sadya, the traditional grand feast. Shopping for vegetables, spices, and festive clothing usually kicks off around Atham. The air is filled with anticipation, not only for the food and festivities but also for the warmth of togetherness.
